Meet the Author & Engineer: Julie

Julie is an engineer! Her passion and reverence for her work fuel her drive to shed light on the field’s many exciting opportunities for girls and young women. She is a passionate advocate for women in engineering and cares deeply about the future of the industry.

Julie is a Chief Engineer for a major geostationary satellite program at Boeing.  She was recently recognized by SSPI with the 2023 “20 Under 35” Award and Promise Award.  Julie is an active STEM outreach champion and author of the best-selling book: “Pull Don’t Push: Why STEM Messaging to Girls Isn’t Working and What to Do Instead”   

Over her career, Julie has worked on a wide range of space programs, including the Space Launch System, Starliner Crew Vehicle, SWOT earth-observing satellite, and the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.  While at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), she was a Lead Engineer for the radar instrument of the Europa Clipper Mission, which will launch to Jupiter in 2024 to study the oceans of Europa and search for extraterrestrial life. 

Julie has volunteered with K12 STEM outreach for more than a decade.  She serves as a board member for the Engaging Girls in STEM program with the Los Angeles County Office of Education and as a national supervisor for the Science Olympiad organization.  She lives with her husband and growing family in Los Angeles and is the proud mother of two twin boys and another girl on the way!
